What is the Yield Curve?

The yield curve plots the yields of similar quality fixed income securities against the maturity of each security. The yield curve is also commonly referred to as the term structure of interest rates. An often-quoted yield curve is a chart depicting yields of different maturity government securities. Investors often use the yield curve to compare and contrast yields offered by short-term, medium-term and long-term fixed income securities.
