Press Release: Merk Funds Surpass $750 Million in Assets Under Management

— As investors seek downside protection in tumultuous markets, The Authority on Currencies™ leads the way —

PALO ALTO, CA. – August 17, 2011 – Merk Investments LLC, manager of Merk Funds℠ announced today that the total assets under management for its three currency mutual funds have surpassed $750 million, buoyed by investors seeking to reduce their exposure to the U.S. dollar.

“The recent market turbulence underscores investors’ need to diversify their investments outside of the U.S. dollar,” explains Axel Merk, President and CIO of Merk Investments. “We are seeing more investors embrace the currency asset class as a way to seek diversification and downside protection,” continues Merk.

“Morningstar1 recently picked our Merk Hard Currency Fund as one way to seek protection against market volatility and over-exposure to the U.S. dollar,” explains Axel Merk, reasoning that “from an investment standpoint, it is increasingly difficult to diversify one’s portfolio, as uncorrelated asset classes are difficult to find. Currencies in general have historically exhibited low correlations with traditional asset classes, and as such, may provide diversification benefits and an attractive risk/return profile for investors’ portfolios.”

Merk Investments, with over $750 million in assets under management, is the largest mutual fund company focusing exclusively on currencies. The Merk Funds are a suite of transparent no-load currency mutual funds that do not typically employ leverage, consisting of: the Merk Hard Currency Fund℠ (MERKX), the Merk Asian Currency Fund® (MEAFX), and the Merk Absolute Return Currency Fund® (MABFX). The Merk Funds provide investors with the opportunity to add managed currency exposure to their portfolios, which may provide valuable diversification benefits.
